Why Start of the Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ – LCMC
Reaction to the ELCA
The cross on top of Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, damaged by a sudden tornado at the very hour of the historic vote in August 2009.
In the last 30 years the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America has changed dramatically in its understanding of Biblical authority and the basic fundamentals of Christian belief. We have witnessed this change. We see pastors and seminary professors frown on phrases such as: “accepting Jesus into my heart”, “the authority of scripture”, “my commitment to Christ”, even “Biblical truth”.
It is apparent that a spirit of intellectualism and humanism has guided the values of ELCA leaders. This has happened to such an extent that the church has slipped out of the evangelical fold and into the realm of liberal protestant churches. As a result the Lutheran church has experienced a decline in membership and less personal involvement in Christian life practices by the laity.
The vote taken by the ELCA National Church Council in Minneapolis in August 2009 to ordain practicing homosexuals is only a symptom of the lack of Biblical knowledge and lack of strong evangelical leadership remaining in the church. The time has come for a purposeful and intentional reaction from the remnant of evangelicals in the Lutheran church. I am one of those pastors who has left the ELCA in order to help found a new Lutheran church that is true to the values of the Reformation and yet is also ready to win the lost for Jesus Christ in our day!
It is no longer enough to say we are Lutherans. That brand no longer has much meaning, especially given the vote in Minneapolis. Instead we must now re-vision what it means to be servants of Jesus Christ, leaders of a new generation, and leaders of a new church that is based on scripture and boldly proclaims the joy of obedient Christian living.
• How Did We Begin our Journey?
We are Lutherans that won’t be bullied by Synods, bishops or fellow Lutherans that accuse us of walking away from God because we walk away from the walls that they say God is in each Sunday morning. We are not walking away from the Lord or the Word. We are walking away from the ELCA because, with each; politically friendly; vote they make, they are muddying the Word that God left for us to learn from and to live by.
There are plenty of people, churches and t.v. pastors that twist those words to their purpose and need. Some within the ELCA Lutheran church have had enough and have decided to put their feet down firmly and walk toward the light and the Word of our Lord. We are a small group who has come out of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA). Currently we are a church that is member-led, and hope in the future to call a pastor.
We meet at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church (LCMS) – located at 3307 W. Rowan, in northwest Spokane.
Please join us Sunday at 10:30 am for Worship. Sunday School for all ages is at 9:30 am.
